The Sustainable Sanitation for Schools Factsheet concludes that with greater attention to guiding principles and adequate finances, schools have the potential to reach hundreds of millions of school children and their families to teach them good hygiene habits as part of sustainable sanitation. The guiding principles for successful and sustainable WASH facilities are identified as stakeholder involvement – in particular pupils, teachers, parents and school administration; demand-responsive approaches; monitoring outcomes, impacts and processes; using a multi-faceted approach for hygiene advocacy; establishing an enabling environment at policy level and skills-based education.
