The paper starts by sharing the goal of Vision 21 – a vision of the future for water, sanitation and hygiene. It acknowledges a key part of this is through better school sanitation and stronger hygiene education so that today’s children become tomorrow’s healthy adults. The paper defines the what and why of SSHE, the world-wide movement of SSHE and then focuses in on water and sanitation coverage in India. It looks at current policies in India along with what can be learned from these including education, health, organisational and management issues and the quality and standards of facilities.
