The BRAC WASH programme launched in 2006 as part of a national Bangladesh effort to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. Its approach was that building capacity and empowering communities would prove to be more effective than simply building toilets and it also focused on reaching the poor and the ultra-poor, and empowering women to play a major role in WASH efforts.
